The movie starring Mammootty is about the final naval war waged by Kunjali Marakkar IV. It was Kunjali Marakkar and his naval warriors who defended the Indian coastal line for the first time against the foreigners. In 1498, Kunjali Marakkar - the title given to the Muslim naval chief of the Hindu king of Calicut - and his followers fought many heroic battles on the seas against the Portuguese. Anyway, the fans of Mammootty and Mohanlal are excited that their favourite stars would have a ‘historic’ face off on screen as the legendary Kunjali Marakkar.
It is very rare that two movies about the same historical character would be made in Malayalam cinema and that too with the two leading superstars. The big budget movie will be jointly produced by Antony Prumbavoor, Confident Group and Moonshot Entertainment. The makers claim that the movie titled Marakkar, Arabikadalinte Simham will be the most expensive movie ever made in Malayalam. However, Priyadarshan confirmed recently that the movie will take off soon and launched the title at an event. He also added that he would wait for eight months to see whether Mammootty’s project takes off or else he would proceed with his. The filmmaker had then told Onmanorama that if the makers of the film with Mammootty were proceeding with their project, then he would back out of his version of the movie. Priyadarshan too had earlier announced a project about Kunjali Marakkar IV with Mohanlal essaying the lead role. Leading artists from Malayalam and Tamil will also be part of an ensemble cast. The movie will be reportedly released in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. The script of the movie is jointly penned by TP Rajeevan and Sankar Ramakrishnan. The movie is to be helmed by Santosh Sivan for the banner of August Cinemas. I will be there with you, in the name of Allah, Muhammed Kunjali Marakkar.” Mega star Mammootty had announced this project on the Keralapiravi day last year. We may wage war on the land and on these tumultuous waves. We will fight till the last Malayali survives. The message that they haven’t dropped the project was quite apparent from the words on the poster which read, “We may lay down our lives but not our honour. It was through his Facebook page that Shaji Nadesan shared a poster of the movie. Though there were unconfirmed reports that the makers have shelved the Kunjali Marakkar project with Mammootty, cinematographer turned director Santosh Sivan had brushed aside those reports saying that the project was not scrapped. Now Shaji Nadesan, who bankrolls the movie starring Mammootty, confirmed that their project on the same subject is still on. Recently director Priyadarshan flagged off his ambitious project Marakkar Arabikadalinte Simhan with Mohanlal in the lead role. Mollywood screen icons Mammootty and Mohanalal are all set to lock horns on screens as the historical character Kunjali Marakkar.
